Lost track of the days... December 22, 2009

Well, the biggest news is that we finally have a DISHWASHER!  YAY!  Thank you, Craigslist, once again.  It was awfully fun to watch James at work installing it. He pulled out some electrical skills, some plumbing skills, some tile skills, some muscle skills.   Impressive.  The man has mad skills. :-)

We also hosted our first big party -- James' birthday.  Over 40 people joined us for dinner, and we weren't sitting on top of each other!  Thank you, Lord, for our house.  Of course, we can only imagine it being better within a couple of years, but it's definitely pretty cool right now.

James spent the day of the party jacking up a beam in the garage. The best part was that less than an hour before the party, he's making the house creak and groan, and I'm imagining the guests arriving to a house with only 1 story.  Learning to trust his knowledge was the lesson of the day.  But I sure was jumpy!

Did I mention I got presents wrapped and under our prettiest tree ever?  

Day 63 -- About time for an update...

Well, we've been busy. Not many major things getting done, but to those of us living here, the little things are obvious.  Another box unpacked, a clock hung on the wall, a cabinet organized, and, oh yeah, more laundry done and meals cooked/eaten/cleaned up. :-)

James has been doing a lot of work in the garage, including tearing out the ceiling in preparation for a new beam.  And Saturday, he got everything in there unpacked and organized, allowing us to get all 3 vehicles in!  Of course, we're still working on that garage door opener, but it's progress.

I got the inside of the front door painted -- the last of the blue is gone.  YAY! And it only took 3 coats to defeat the blue -- 1 of Kilz and 2 of the paint.  I'm about tired of painting all those little grooves!  But it looks so much brighter in the entry.

Planning for our first get-together here this weekend.  Looking forward to having lots o' people in the house.

And the dreaming stage is in full force for the kitchen/dining area.  Trying out some new ideas in my head.  We'll see...

Day 52

Step by step.  Every day, another box unpacked, a shelf organized, something cleaned, etc.  It's the little things that are happening right now.  Hard to see the progress, but I know it's there.  And tonight, the Christmas tree! Now that will be a big fun thing. Probably won't get it decorated until Saturday night, but I'll be glad to have it in the house -- love that smell! 

I'm officially at home now.  Full-time.  And it's real-life. And it's good.  Love having time to order my house and serve my little family -- and others. I've realized that I'll have more time to minister to OTHERS.  Praying for the obedience to follow through. 

Day 47!

YAY! We have a playroom/back room/extra room/clean room!!!  Uncle Jeff finished the carpet tonight and James got the baseboards put in.  I got the call from work to stay home all night!!!! So, I was able to do some moving and unpacking after the girls went to bed.  It's all been in my brain for weeks, so it went together pretty quickly.  I also discovered that only 1 of 5 outlets in the room work, and it only works when the left lightswitch is on (the right switch does nothing. nada.  zilch.).  I love this place. :-)

I forgot...After their baths, the girls got to run and crawl and lay around on the new carpet. They both seemed awfully excited.  Of course, Gwyneth probably won't enjoy it as much now that it's not off-limits. 

It felt so good to get it sort of settled. James and Jeff brought down the toy box I painted and (after we pried the lid open -- I forgot to follow-up after painting it -- haha,) we filled it up. Of course, one wall of the room is sheet rock, the other bright red, but it is so nice to have that space. And especially for the other living room to not be so full of toys. 

James tore out a little of the garage ceiling today -- he's been working hard to get the shed organized with the garage stuff.  He was doing some investigating to determine a plan for replacing the "structural beam", commonly identified as a "pipe".  :-) 

I also made cookies for the first time in my oven.  Electric's definitely different, but they were plenty yummy! 

Can't believe I'm one 12-hour shift away from unemployment.  Getting awfully excited...

Day 44

Well, yesterday was a great day of doing absolutely nothing. :-)  It's okay to have those days, right?  We played and napped and played some more. Then as soon as Daddy got home, we headed to church for dinner and prayer.  And then went to bed early! (for us)

Today started out much more productively. I got up early (on time!) and we had a nice calm breakfast time.  Charis and I then made Cranberry Walnut Muffins and a Cranberry Pecan Pie (yes, I had cranberries to use up).  Yum yum. 

Uncle Ric and Aunt Debbie from Virginia came by to see our house with Grandmother and Papa.  Mom and Haley also joined us for muffins and coffee.  Charis has headed to Granbee's for an afternoon play date and I'm enjoying a quiet house with G sleeping.  Tomorrow will make up for the nice quiet slow day we've had today.  :-)

Day 42

I think I'm gonna get used to this stay-at-home thing pretty fast. We had a great day of just being at home.  Vacuuming, laundry, dishes, eating. And we even got some more toys/books/clothes organized and Jeff did some work in the back room.  We ended the day with a yummy dinner at G'mother's house, where Gwyneth decided to take her first steps to Daddy!  I have a feeling she'll be running by the end of the week. What a cutie. :-)

Day 40

Well, the last two days have been good ones! Yesterday, we girls took off to Home Depot ("Daddy's favowite orwange store") and then to Sherwin Williams.  After some yummy PB&J for lunch, I got to painting during naptime -- working on the huge toy chest that we found here.  I had to clean it first -- cleaned up what someone told me was cat vomit -- made me want to vomit right on top of it.  ugh.  Anyway, I finished that today and am ready to put it to work!

Last night, James came home for a yummy dinner, then we just relaxed for the evening. It was awfully nice. I got a little laundry done and he did some studying.  Today, he cleaned up the tool room and got his desk moved into the "office" (ha).  He also got the rest of the doors put back on and cleaned out the garage. The girls are spending the night with Granbee and Poppy, and we spent the evening with old friends (half of them family!), catching up.  Good times were had by all. 

Off to bed for us.  No little alarm clocks to wake us in the morning. Had better turn our alarms up. :-)

Day 38 -- PRODUCTIVE!!!

Well, I finally feel like I had another productive day around here. Not only was I showered, dressed, coffeed, and read before the girls got up, we did laundry, "office" work, phone calls, dishwasher shopping, grocery shopping, naps, park-playing, eating, eating, eating, and dusting. (Lots of it with Auntie Hay at our sides)  I also mounted the girls' new towel hooks, the bathroom towel ring, the whiteboard calendar, and the bathroom clock -- which I FINALLY found in the "attic."  I also put the hall cabinet doors back on and swept and mopped the kitchen/dining room.  Wait, there's more... This all occurred while B-I-L Jeff used the grinder on the back room, filling our house with the most pleasant of noises. But he did pause a couple of hours for naptime and stayed to eat dinner with us, AND he's done with the grinding. It looks great!  Thank you, Jeff!  We also got all of our boxes taken out to Uncle Curt's in preparation for their move next week.  YAY! 

I'm truly ready for bed tonight! 

Day 37 -- Yes, I skipped 36

I figure being at work on Day 36 absolves me of responsibility for blogging, right??

Day 37 was a day of not much -- sleeping, church.   Now James and Jeff are clearing out the back room to get ready for Jeff to do carpet. I feel like we've been "getting ready" in there for 2 weeks now.  ugh.  Any day now...

And I'm feeling a bit ready for bed. I know, I slept all day...

Day 35

A fun day of Target shopping, long naps, dinner and playtime at Granbee's and an LC for me!  So we're all home tonight unexpectedly. So fun!

Didn't do much around the house except dishwashing and laundry. :-)  I did give the incredibly stinky diaper pail a good scrub tonight. It's airing out on the porch.  Is 2-1/2 years too much to ask out of the poor thing?? 

Off to bed...

Day 34

Well, I slept while the fam attended church -- what a slacker. :-)  After heavenly naps for us all, we joined our church family for a smorgasbord of yummy Thanksgiving food.  What a treat to enjoy fellowship over our meal, and I was able to catch up with a good friend. And G ate all real food -- pasta salad, sweet potatoes, green beans, mashed potatoes, rolls.  What a gal!  She's growing up so fast!  Charis, of course, enjoyed running in circles with her cousins/friends and making several trips to the dessert tables.  Ah, the life of a toddler.

James got the doors put back on this afternoon. SO NICE! 

Laundry and ironing tonight, then off to bed with a new Frasier DVD.  This is the life...

Day 33 -- DOORS

Well, the doors weren't much to start with, but James has made them look as good as possible -- a fresh coat of white glossy paint sprayed on and now they're drying.

Ryan and Haley took the girls for the day and joined us for dinner before I headed to work again.  What a blessing for them to love the girls so much -- and for the girls to love them!  Charis came home with hands full of crafts and pictures -- so fun!  

The Benders also stopped by with a housewarming gift for us -- THANK YOU!!!  Among other things, there was a new crock/canister to hold my kitchen gadgets -- replacing the one that shattered in the move. How thoughtful!! 

Back to work I go.  In charge tonight...

Day 32 -- Another Reality Check

Ah, Friday.  It promised to be so full of progress, but I barely stayed afloat. Laundry, feeding kiddos, dishes, dishes, dishes, keeping paper products out of Gwyneth's mouth. That's what I did today. And it's by no means a waste of a day, but it's a real-life day. 

Jeff did come over and make a lot of noise in the red room -- chipping up concrete.  :-)  All prep for carpet.  Can't wait until that gets done, so G can crawl freely without me having to wonder if she's found the room o' dust and concrete. 

Off to work...

Day 31

What a day.  After not much sleep again, thanks to my poor girlies, we spent the morning vacuuming, washing dishes, and making some yummy Cranberry Walnut Bread.  Grandma Brown came for the afternoon so I could go to the doctor (all's well with baby), and then I met with my managers.  Could not have picked a worse time to resign -- the floor was crazy, and several nurses have quit or cut back in the last couple of weeks.  Ugh.  But I'm glad that part is done. Now just 7 more nights...Wow!

We said "Goodbye" to our little Camry tonight.  The Shelburnes came over to pick it up, and we had a really fun time hanging out -- especially the little girls.  I'm hoping the car will be a great deal for them.  And now we're really on the hunt...

I told James the other night how fun it was to be able to walk around barefoot in (most of) the house.  (What a difference a month makes!) His reply:  "You know what's more fun than that?  Because you were in THIS bathroom, I went to the OTHER bathroom!"  Talk about a nice feature!  More than one toilet in a house?!  Amazing!

Headed to bed a little earlier than usual tonight.  I'm headed back to work tomorrow night, so it will be a long day.  But we're almost done!!!

Day 30

Vacation day for James today -- which just meant more work at home. :-)  We started out with an early breatkfast just down the street at Omelettes N Moore (clever, eh?).  Yummy yummy...

James got all of the doors primed with the sprayer, which was good while it worked and incredibly frustrating when it didn't.  Jeff stopped by (he does a lot these days :-))  and helped out for a few minutes, topped off with a brownie for the road. 

In big news, we sold our car today!  Weren't planning on doing it this soon, but our buyers (friend from work and her cop husband) were ready, so we went for it.  We'll be driving the Starship Enterprise for a while until we get our new ride.  We're just really grateful that we didn't even have to put a "For Sale" sign on our car -- talk about easy!

James also provided the neighbors with another flea market tonight -- findings from the shed on the curb -- there have already been several things taken. Crazy...

Well, the uniforms are starched and pressed and hanging, ready for the next three work days.  Whew. I'm off to bed.

Day 29

Another real-life day today.  Gwyneth was up several times last night because the poor thing couldn't breathe. Runny nose season.  Whoopie...   Needless to say, I was fallling asleep on the living room floor by 9am. :-) Charis was sweet to ignore me then wake me up with a kiss when she'd had enough alone time. (G was napping -- lucky kid). 

Anyway, we had a fun day of unpacking some more boxes -- picture frames, stuffed animals, blankets, clothes.  The girls did great today playing together.  Charis cracks me up -- "Come on, Sissy. You can do it."  "This way, Sissy. Come here, Sissy."  "No, do it like this, Sissy."  And Gwyneth went right along with it, enjoying the company (and built-in entertainment). 

We took gloriously long naps this afternoon, and James got home right on time.  We sat down for dinner -- a first for just the four of us in our new house.  What a treat!  James then went to work on trying out the fireplace, too, and we got to enjoy a nice warm glow for a little while.  The girls were fascinated -- still have to figure out how we're going to handle the fireplace issues.  Screen, rules, soot, etc. 

I'm working on laundry and, once again, starching. :-)  James is OFF TOMORROW!  So I'm taking the opportunity to get all of his uniforms done in the next 2 days, ready to get him through the weekend, since I'll be working.  We sure have plenty of places to hang things up here, especially places where it doesn't matter one bit if starch drips on the floor. LOL. 

Enjoying a hot cup of tea, then nothing else for the evening. Ah......

Day 28

A good day at home...

I got up early this morning -- before the girls -- amazing what a difference that can make in your day! After breakfast, I cleaned out the back living room and swept and vacuumed and created a rather large dust cloud. :-)  But it sure looks a lot cleaner! 

We headed to Target -- fun as always -- and got some bath rugs, houseshoes, etc.  Just plain fun! 

We spent the rest of the day playing with the toys which have all returned home from Poppy and Granbee's! The girls had a blast playing with everything. Charis kept yelling, "Mommy, look!" everytime she found something for the first time. It was pretty fun.

We ended up taking James over to the Browns' to get his bike for a trip back to Norman (meeting. ugh.), so we stopped in to say hi and had a yummy dinner courtesy of the fantastic Mrs. Brown.  That worked out well! :-)

Back to Target tonight for some exchanges -- wanted to be able to say I finished my projects today. And now we're off to bed. Another day at home tomorrow, then James will be off on Wednesday! YAY!!

Day 27

Well, for the first time in about six weeks, we were able to go to Sunday morning church as a family. All four of us.  What a treat!  We had a great day at church today and a yummy fun lunch at Mom's for family birthdays.  Not to mention a fabulous naptime -- thanks to all who made that possible. :-) 

I swept and mopped the kitchen tonight -- that floor's gonna drive me nuts, but James couldn't be happier -- I'm mopping!!  Felt like my sweet dad, mopping at the end of the evening.  Funny...

I also did my favorite -- ironing uniforms. I'm getting to be quite the pro. I highly recommend PREMIUM starch -- it truly doesn't flake.  Worth the extra cents.

Have I mentioned lately that I love my husband?  He's a dreamer, alright, with big plans in his head for this house, among other things. I've learned not to get scared when he shares those dreams -- I just enjoy the sharing.  But he's also a doer.  What a hard-worker he is, and so talented at so many things. I'm thankful for his strong work ethic, for his willingness and ability to provide for us girls, and his incredibly thoughtful and sensitive self while doing it all.  Every day brings a new appreciation for this husband, father, and friend that the Lord has provided...

Day 26 -- Settling In

Well, today was our first day at home.  And what a day it's been.  Gwyneth got us up and running right on time -- 7am.  Ugh... So after she had her bottle, we all enjoyed strawberry pancakes, bacon, eggs, and fruit. And don't forget the coffee.  Then it was time to get to work.  James headed out to gather some more of our stuff from various places and picked up some bug poison from Kerry.  He spent most of the midday moving furniture and spraying the entire house. Then he got the doors ready to paint.

The girls and I spent the day sorting through dressers and piles of clothes, but ended up getting everyone's clothes in the right drawers. That will make things so much easier!  I also got all of our laundry done -- thanks again, Dad, for the W/D hookup! 

Dad and Mom came by to finish up the windows -- they washed the outside windows and it makes a huge difference!  Thank you!  Jeff also stopped by to assess the icemaker situation and returned for dinner and repairs. I'm glad to report that it has just produced its first pieces of ice! (of course, they had interesting little particles in them, so we'll be disposing of the first few batches) :-)

Speaking of dinner, we enjoyed a yummy casserole provided by my sweet friend.  Thank you, Kirsten! It was the perfect solution for dinner tonight!

Curt, Kenna and Molly also stopped by and ate and played with us.  The girls had a great time playing together. And Molly's walking like a madwoman! Way to go, Molly! 

I got the computer hooked up tonight, the wireless is working, I'm typing, and James and Jeff are snacking and chatting.  The girls are sleeping peacefully, and life is good. We're really looking forward to all going to church together tomorrow -- it's been a long time since we've gotten to do that! Over a month at least!

I found myself being frustrated with how the daily homemaking tasks -- laundry, meals, dishwashing, naps, diapers, sweeping up potential snack for Gwyneth, fishing "snacks" out of Gwyneth's mouth, etc -- were interfering with my projects today.  I had to remind myself several times that this is real life now.  We live HERE.  Here in the middle of a project everywhere you look. It's NOT going to all get done today or tomorrow or even next month or next year.  We're going to have to learn to set small goals, enjoy the progress, and live real life. 

What a blessing to be here as a family. Thank you, Lord...

Day 25 -- HOME SWEET HOME

(Well, I'm writing this a day late since we're just now getting the computer hooked up, but ignore that...)

We're home. Unbelievable. I started off the morning early as usual (thanks to little G), and shipped the girls off with Grandma and Papa to breakfast at Cora's house.  I headed to Crest for a restocking trip.  After I bought out the store and ended up with two full carts of grocery bags, the sweet (but somewhat mentally challenged) sacker looked at me straight-faced and said, "Do you need any help out today, Ma'am?"  I actually chuckled out loud, but then composed myself and said, "Yes, thank you."  Poor kid.  Of course, then I started thinking, "Am I a wimp for not taking these out myself?? Do other women tackle two carts??" I decided I didn't really care what other women do...

I unloaded all of the groceries and organized the pantry, then headed back to the Browns' to gather some more things -- boxes of food, baby food, cups/spoons/bowls, randomness from our room...  The car was packed, so I headed back to the house to unload.  I got the bathroom cabinet filled, among other things, and then Haley joined me once I was done unpacking. Nice timing, Hay. :-) I shouldn't complain -- she brought me lunch. Thank you!

We went back to the Browns' and interruped the girls' naptime (oops) to carry down just about everything else in the room -- clothes, boxes, boxes, boxes.  We then unloaded all of that.  (Are you getting tired with me yet?)

Mom stopped by with a couple of my favorite cousins, who were needing the grand tour. We had a great time showing them around and are glad they'll get to come back someday when it looks a little less icky. :-)

I headed back to the Browns' for a quick shower and took over care of the girlies. We unmade the beds and got things ready for Daddy and Poppy to move as soon as they arrived.  They did arrive quickly and we got the remaining things in one trip!  (except we forgot the diaper pail, which was airing out on the back sidewalk)  Grandmother and Papa and Ryan and Haley joined us for the moving-in festivities, made even more exciting by Chinese takeout.  What a first meal.  Sure was yummy, though. We got beds made and finally got the girls bathed and to bed.  They did really well.

James and I were in bed by 9:45!  We were exhausted, but we ended up talking for over an hour.  It was so nice to catch up after such a busy week (and of course, it was nice to have a room to ourselves again).  Two episodes of Frasier wrapped up the night, and we all slept well! 

And did I mention that the train is close and frequent?  I'm sure I'll be used to it by the end of next week, but wow. It was still coming every 30 minutes or so until I finally went to sleep about midnight.  Didn't wake any of us up, though.   We're pretty used to traffic and such with our former life on Penn. :-)

What a blessing to be at home.  Home.  I love it...

Day 24 -- WOW!!!

What a day it was! I started out early with some cleaning -- stovetop, outside of the fridge, lightswitches, front door. Mom joined me for the big fun -- the kitchen floor. Gross, gross, gross. But oh, how nice to see all the dirt go away. And of course, both of our cameras were unavailable. We promise we cleaned it!

I also got the doors off of the hall cabinet (with a little extra man "umph" from Jeff, who stopped by at just the right time). I painted the trim for the cabinets -- one more victory in the battle against the blue. :-)

We stopped for a yummy lunch at the Browns', interrupted by a call from the alarm company -- one of our doors wasn't completely shut. Ugh. But glad it was nothing. Mr. Brown accompanied me back to the house at my Mr. Brown's request. :-)

After lunch, I headed back finished scrubbing the pantry floor. Jan sent a yummy crockpot of stew and some homemade bread for our dinner -- THANK YOU!!! So that was simmering on the counter. I also added a second coat of paint on the hall cabinet and cleaned up the counters and dining room area.

The Benders arrived about 6 for their first visit to the house. They were quickly joined by the Bs with the girlies, James, Jeff and the Browns. We had a fun time eating all together, while James, Daniel and Stephen worked on the living room baseboards. They got those done very quickly, and it looks great! Thanks, boys, for your help!

After dinner, we got to work -- putting together the girls' bed frames, and arranging furniture in our bedroom. We also got the living room furniture moved in and the dining room table put together. Dad's big job for the evening was hooking up the washer and dryer. And praise the Lord, it all works properly (no water lines going to nowhere). Thank you, Dad!

Gwyneth took right off down the hall -- crawling straight for her room. She seemed very comfortable, at ease, at home... And Charis made herself at home, finally finding her Swiffer ("my sweeper") -- I'll have to help her understand that it's not going to help on the carpet like it did on our wood floors. But I hate to quench any desires to help with cleaning. :-)

It was hard to leave tonight -- except there are no mattresses on the beds and no food in the fridge. But it sure does look like home -- hard to believe that 3 weeks ago today, we started this process. Thank you, Lord, for this home. What a blessing it already it. And I'm so ready...

Day 23

I headed over to the house this afternoon to touch up the baseboards in the master bedroom and finish up the painting in the entry.  I got the rest of the tape pulled off and cleaned up the kitchen a bit. 

James was able to make it to church with us tonight! YAY! 

Tomorrow, I'm planning to head over early for a long day of detailed tasks. But we're close, close, close! 

Day 22

Tuesday, Tuesday...  James got the baseboards for the living room painted tonight. And that's about all we did today. :-)

Day 21

Ah, Monday... Jeff spent the day finishing up the carpet, while I stayed home and played and napped with my girls. I'm at work tonight... James is attempting to complete some house tasks, but is having to balance them with studying -- apparently, they had a quite a push-up session first thing this morning. Ugh. So glad that's him and not me!


Moving in is so close, I can taste it. I'm so grateful for my precious in-laws who have graciously made us feel right at home. But i'm so ready to be in my own house, to do our own thing. Of course, that means meal-planning again, fast showers while the girls are temporarily occupied, cleaning cleaning cleaning, and continuing to work on the house. But only 8 more shifts of work, and then that can be my ONLY full-time job! Praise the Lord! That's so close I can taste it too. :-)

Looking forward to getting back to housework Wednesday afternoon. Lots to do!

Day 20

Well, the carpet is down and vaccumed in the living room (and getting closer by the minute down the halls and into the bedrooms). I took the girls by after church tonight to let them crawl around on it. Charis was really pumped and Gwyneth seemed awfully impressed. :-)  James also got the sheet rock repair done in the master bathroom, so it looks a bit less nasty in there.  I'll add pics soon, but for now, I'm off to sleep. 

Day 19 -- CARPET!!!

Well, today is finally the day. When I left the house at 10pm tonight, Jeff had all the carpet laid out and cut. He was already starting to stretch and put it down in the living room. Amazing! And it's not half as bad as I was expecting. Instead of the gold sparkling carpet I worried we would find, it is a nice warm cream and looks great! I even walked barefoot on it to try it out, and it's heavenly. Thank you, Jeff!!

James has been busy today. While looking for a sink at Habitat, he found a desk instead. So, for a great deal, he got the desk he has been looking for since we got married! I'm so thrilled for him -- patience has paid off! He also got to deposit his first paycheck -- he said he got a pic of it for me, but I probably won't post that on the internet. :-) He also removed the monstrous "microwave" that was built in above the stove. It's on the curb, ready for a flea market fanatic to grab. This evening he's working on the master bathroom sheet rock. What a mess that is.

I made it to Home Depot after I put the girls to bed and bought some light switch/outlet covers. I'm finding that every time I go to Home Depot (which is becoming several times!), I feel like more of a GIRL. Who knew there were so many choices for plain switch plates?! These choices blindside me and make me feel downright ignorant. But according to James, I made the right choice tonight. YAY! I got most of them installed in the bedrooms and living room and kitchen. Mark that off my list...

James also tried to hook up the fridge/icemaker today to the water line, only to find that the copper tubing coming out of the wall is attached to nothing -- that's right, it travels through the wall and ends up on the garage floor in the hot water heater closet. Hilarious. Ice trays, here we come. :-)

Dad picked up all the empty boxes and paper today and took them to Curt and Kenna's. Thank you! Happy packing, kids!

I also purchased our first coffee beans for the house. Feels good to know that fresh-brewed coffee is now available -- definitely feels like a home...

I am reminded a zillion times a day that James and I are not doing this on our own.
